In 2023, when “Barbie” (box office receipts $1.4 billion) with actress and producer Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig stormed cinemas around the world, it was logical to expect an increase in female participation in major Hollywood films. However, things are quite different. As follows from the statistics – girls in the cinema on the main roles became even less, last year on this indicator reached a historic low. It would seem that “Poor Unfortunate” with Emma Stone, “Priscilla: Elvis and I” Sofia Coppola with Kaylee Spany, “Past Lives” Celine Sohn, “Saltburn” Emerald Fennell …. but no, the industry is still masculinised.
Researchers looked at a hundred of the biggest Hollywood films and statistically recorded a regression in terms of female representation on big screens in 2023. Only 30 films feature women and girls in lead and supporting roles. This figure is down sharply from 2022, when the “beautiful half of humanity” could be seen in 44 films.
